Underground Ernie

Underground Ernie is a cutting-edge CGI animated children’s TV series launched in 2006 on BBC CBeebies and also broadcast on BBC2.  The show had one of the highest viewing figures of any children’s series at the time. Co-created and executive produced by John Deery at Joella Productions, the Underground Ernie brand is modern, fun, urban and cool. It appeals to a wide range of boys and girls from 3-8 years old.

The series is set in Ernie’s world, the hub of which is the International Station. Ernie, voiced by Gary Lineker, has two assistants, Millie and Mr Rails, and is joined by a variety of train characters based on the names of a number of the famous London Underground tube lines; Victoria, Bakerloo, Hammersmith & City, Jubilee and Circle. They are also visited by their friends from other countries including; Paris from France, Brooklyn from New York, Moscow from Russia, Osaka from Japan and Sydney from Australia.

All episodes have an underlying educational message and Ernie, or one of the other characters, usually saving the day! Joella Productions has gone through a restructuring process and now plans to re-launch the brand in 2012. With on-going series potential, especially through the continued relationship with Transport for London leading up to the London 2012 Olympic Games, Underground Ernie continues to appeal.
